Allow Acrobat Pro to resize images, or do it myself in Photoshop first?

Hi all

I have been away from print design for a few years, although I had extensive experience in design and prepress 'back in the day'. So I'm a bit out of touch with the latest.

I have a high end photo book going to press soon – so quality is of utmost importance – and many of the placed images, in InDesign, are way too high in resolution - effective dpi is sometimes at 800dpi and so on. The question I have is:

Is it safe to let Acrobat automatically downsize the images when I export from InDesign; or

Should I make the effort to automatically resize in Photoshop, to ensure that everything is not too far away from 2 to 2.5x the line screen?
